What is a knowledge panel actually worth?

17 min read Updated 31 August 2026 Summarise with ChatGPT ↗ Summarise with Claude ↗
The short version

A panel changes the shape of the answer a stranger gets when they type your name at a decision point. It settles namesake confusion, fixes your descriptor in Google's own voice, and feeds the AI assistants that now answer on your behalf. It does not improve rankings, does not bring traffic, and is not worth buying if nobody searches your name.

Start with what actually changes

The day a panel appears, exactly one thing changes: the shape of the answer a stranger gets when they type your name.

That sounds small. It is not, because of when it happens. Nobody searches your name idly. They search it at a decision point — before a call, after a referral, while assembling a shortlist, halfway through writing a contract. The search is the last thing between them and a commitment, and until now they have been reading whatever the internet happened to leave lying around.

A panel replaces “whatever was lying around” with a settled answer, in Google’s own voice, in the most-looked-at rectangle on the page.

The honest framing

A panel does not make you more credible. It makes you more legible. If the underlying work is thin, a panel just helps people find out faster. That is worth saying plainly, because the pitch you will hear elsewhere is that the box confers authority. It reflects it.

Bhavik Sarkhedi on the one factor shared by everybody who has actually claimed a panel. Five minutes, and it is the answer to why some people wait years.

The five things it does that are genuinely worth money

1. It settles the namesake question in your favour

If four people share your name, a buyer arrives at an ambiguous page and has to work out which one you are. Most will not bother; they will form an impression from whichever result is loudest. A panel ends the ambiguity in one glance, and for people with common names this is worth more than everything else on this list combined.

Ordering is ours, from client engagements, not a published dataset. It is here to make one point: every high-value moment on that list is somebody checking a name they already have.

2. It occupies the space where doubt lives

The right-hand column on a name search is otherwise empty or filled with something Google guessed. A panel puts your photograph and your description there, above the fold, before the person has read a single link.

3. It fixes what your title is

Harsh Pamnani carries the descriptor Author. Sandeep Tiku carries Chief technology officer of DAZN. That single line is now the first thing anyone learns about them, and it was not chosen by a copywriter. It is Google reporting the consensus of the public web, which makes it far more persuasive than the same words on your own homepage.

Worked exampleWhat a settled descriptor is actually worth

Indian entrepreneur and investor. Five words, written by Google, sitting above everything else a stranger will read about him. He did not choose that sentence and he cannot edit it.

Now consider the version of that person without a panel: a stranger types the name, gets a LinkedIn headline, a company About page and three articles that each describe him slightly differently, and has to assemble an impression themselves. Most will not bother. They will take whichever result is loudest. That gap is what you are buying.

4. It feeds the machines that now answer for you

The same structured evidence that produces a panel is what ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity read when somebody asks them who the good people in your field are. The panel is the visible receipt. The invisible effect — being named in an AI answer — often arrives first, and for a lot of clients it turns out to matter more.

Worked exampleWhy an author panel is worth more than a founder panel

Chetan Bhagat’s panel carries a shelf of six books with covers, titles and years. Every one of those is an ISBN, and an ISBN is a permanent identifier that ties a published work to an exact name.

Practically, this means an author’s panel is harder to lose. Articles go stale, press cycles pass, a company changes name. A book stays in a catalogue for decades. If you are weighing where to spend the next twelve months, this is the argument for writing one.

5. It gives you a lever when something goes wrong

An unclaimed panel is a box about you that you have no standing to correct. A claimed one gives you a verified route to suggest changes with evidence attached, and Google processes those far faster than an anonymous suggestion. Most people only discover the value of this the week they need it.

What it does not do, stated plainly

Four claims get made about knowledge panels that do not survive contact with reality.

The claimWhat is actually true
It will improve your website’s rankingsNo. It occupies space on your name search. It is not a ranking factor for your pages and Google has never suggested it is.
It will bring you trafficUsually the opposite. The panel answers the question on the results page, so some people never click through. What you get is a better answer, not more visits.
It proves you are notableIt proves Google is confident about your identity. Plenty of unremarkable people have panels and plenty of remarkable ones do not.
It protects your reputationIt makes you easier to find, comprehensively. If there is something you would rather nobody found, this work surfaces it faster, not slower.

Who should not bother

There is a version of this page that says everyone needs one. That version would be easier to sell and would be untrue.

  • If nobody searches your name. Some businesses are found entirely through a category search, a marketplace, or a referral that ends in a phone call. If a buyer never types your name, the box nobody sees is worth nothing.
  • If your deal size is small and your volume is high. The maths does not work. A panel earns its cost through a handful of high-consideration decisions, not through many small ones.
  • If you are about to change what you do. A panel is slow to build and slow to update. Getting Google confident that you are one thing, six months before you become another, is an expensive way to make your own repositioning harder.
  • If your public record is thin and you need this soon. The evidence has to exist before it can be organised. There is no configuration of effort that makes Google confident about somebody the web has nothing to say about.
  • If you want the box and not the evidence. That order does not work and cannot be made to work by spending more.
Roughly a third

About a third of people who apply to us fall into one of the five categories above and are told not to proceed. That is not modesty, it is what makes a twelve-month refund survivable.

Do the arithmetic on your own numbers

The only version of this calculation worth trusting is the one built from your figures, not ours.

Your numbers, your arithmetic
$12,000
2
$24,000passing through a search each month
$288,000over a year
96×against a $3,000 build
1recovered deal that pays for it

Read that last tile carefully, because it is the only claim on this page. This is not a promise that a panel converts anybody. It is the observation that a single recovered decision, on most professional deal sizes, covers the entire cost. Whether the decision gets recovered depends on whether the person deserved to win it.

What it is worth to the machines

Something changed in the last two years that makes this whole category more valuable than it used to be, and it is not about Google’s results page at all.

When somebody asks an AI assistant “who are the good brand strategists in India”, the model answers from what it has read about people, not from what those people published about themselves. It is looking for the same thing Google is: independent sources agreeing about who somebody is and what they are good at.

Which means the work is now paying twice. The entity home, the aligned profiles, the schema, the independent coverage — all of it makes Google confident enough to show a box, and all of it makes a language model confident enough to say a name.

Which one moves first

Usually the assistants. They have a lower bar for naming somebody than Google has for displaying a box about them, so around month three a client typically starts getting mentioned in AI answers while the panel is still months away. That is the first honest signal that the work is landing.

There is also a caution here worth stating, because plenty of people are selling the opposite. There is no ranking slot to buy inside a language model. Models do not take bids. Anybody selling you “AI optimisation” with no deliverable except a monthly report is selling a report.

So is it worth three thousand dollars

Here is the answer without the hedging.

Yes, if people search your name before they decide, one client is worth more than a few thousand to you, your public record has real material in it, and you can live with a six-to-twelve month timeline.

No, if any of those four are missing. And three of the four are things you can check in ten minutes rather than things anyone needs to sell you an opinion about.

The fourth — whether your record has real material in it — is what the readiness score is for. It is twelve weighted questions and it is built to be able to tell you no.

Questions people ask next

Will a knowledge panel increase my traffic?

Usually not, and often the reverse. The panel answers the question on the results page, so some people never click through to your site. What improves is the quality of the answer a stranger gets, which is a different thing from the number of visits.

Is it worth it if I already rank first for my own name?

Often yes, because ranking first and being understood are different. A first-place link tells somebody where to click. A panel tells them who you are before they click anything. If you have a common name, it is worth more still.

What is the return on three thousand dollars?

Nobody can honestly quote you one, because no method isolates a panel from everything else happening to a business. What can be said is arithmetic: on most professional deal sizes, one recovered decision covers the whole cost. Whether it gets recovered depends on your actual work.

Does it help with AI assistants like ChatGPT?

The same evidence does, yes, and usually sooner than the panel appears. Models look for independent sources agreeing about who you are, which is exactly what the build produces. The panel is the visible receipt for work that was already paying off invisibly.

What if my industry does not use Google much?

Then this is probably not for you, and you should say so early. The value depends entirely on somebody typing your name at a decision point. If that does not happen in your world, the box nobody looks at is worth nothing.

Next step

Run your own name through the entity check, then score yourself with the readiness tool. Both are free and neither asks for an email address. If the reading comes back saying you are ready, the build page has the price and the terms.
